Key Public Transport Access
The University of Tokyo's Hongo Campus is exceptionally well-served by public transport. The closest subway station is Todaimae Station on the Namboku Line, merely a 1-minute walk from the Agriculture Main Gate. Other nearby stations include Hongo-sanchome Station (served by the Marunouchi and Oedo lines, about a 7-8 minute walk), Nezu Station on the Chiyoda Line (about a 10-minute walk), and Kasuga Station on the Mita Line (about a 15-minute walk). Be aware that routes from Nezu and Kasuga stations involve uphill sections.
For bus access, several routes conveniently stop near the campus. You can take the "Gaku01" bus from Ueno Station or the "Cha07" bus from Ochanomizu Station, both of which will take you to the "Todai-Konai" bus stop within the campus. Other bus lines like the "To43" and "Cha51" also serve stops such as "Todai-Seimon-mae" (Main Gate) and "Todai-Akamon-mae". If you prefer a scenic route, it's about a 20-minute walk from JR Ueno Station through the park.
Airport Routes and Campus Navigation
Reaching the Hongo Campus from Tokyo's international airports is straightforward. From Narita Airport (NRT), the most convenient option is to take the Keisei Skyliner express train to Keisei-Ueno Station, which takes approximately 40-45 minutes. From there, you can take a short taxi ride or a bus to the campus. From Haneda Airport (HND), you can take the Tokyo Monorail to Hamamatsucho Station (about 17-25 minutes) and then transfer to the JR Yamanote Line bound for Ueno Station or Tokyo Station.
A highly recommended tip for navigating Tokyo's transport is to get a pre-paid IC card like Suica or Pasmo. These cards can be used on virtually all trains, buses, and even for purchases at convenience stores and many vending machines. They are available for purchase at JR stations and the Tokyo Monorail station at Haneda Airport. Once you arrive on campus, the primary mode of getting around is on foot. The university asks visitors to use public transportation or walk, and advises against using cars or bicycles. Campus maps are available at information centers on site.
